Last week I went to the supermarket and it seems as though everywhere I turn there are a number of different products promising results based on the fact they contain a specific aromatherapy scent, including candles, oils, and shampoos. But, the question I ask myself is: is all of this aromatherapy treatment just fluff aimed at selling products, or could it be linked to scientific research?
Aromatherapy as a practice has been around for centuries dating back to the ancient Egyptians however as individuals we experience this phenomenon in our everyday lives with out even being aware of the fact. How many times have you walked down a street or into a room and suddenly gotten a whiff of something that brought back wonderful memories or just made you feel great and energized? Every time this occurs you are experiencing aromatherapy; it is just occurring passively in your daily life.
The resulting fact is that aromatherapy is based on science, of which studies have shown reflect on the interactions between the psychological, neurological and immune system. Also, you should recognise that aromatherapy works because it utilizes your own sense of smell - the strongest sense in your body. And, because this sense, dislike any other, has a path that directly leads to your brain it has more influence on your overall feeling and mood. For instance, Lavender can be considered by some to be effective in calming the mind, body and spirit. But, if you are not a fan of the fragrance of Lavender, then you will not see the overall effect that it can have on you as it has on others. Therefore, you will find that it is important for you to work individually with essential oils to find the ones that you enjoy.
This is easy to do because many essential oils have similar or overlapping benefits, leaving you with a number of options for one particular issue. Another option is to mix a couple or a few essential oils together to create your own fragrance that you enjoy and can ultimately receive the vast benefits they have to offer.
